What Is Kundalini Awakening?

Two perspectives on kundalini awakening

As with any unexplored thing, there are various conflicting theories about kudalini awakening. I will simplify them into two camps. One group of people claims that we are more than our physical body and that kundalini energy is the most powerful expression of the ‘life force’ within us. This is essentially the vitalistic perspective. The other more ‘scientific’ perspective claims that kundalini is nothing more than an expression of our nervous system; it could  be brain damage, it could be epilepsy, or it could be something else without negative connotations.


Kundalini and NearDeath Experiences

People who experience near-death experiences  often experience kundalini awakening as an after effect. At the very least, many of them experience symptoms that are directly associated with kundalini awakening, such as becoming paralyzed in strange positions, , spontaneously being unable to breathe, or experiencing: involuntary body movements (kriyas), deep ecstatic tickles or orgasmic feelings, physical sensations starting in the feet, legs or pelvis and moving up the back and neck to the top of the head, down the forehead over the face and the throat, ending in the abdomen (the microcosmic orbit). All of these are reported by both people who experienced near-death experiences and kundalini awakening. From a biological perspective, this may actually make more sense than one might initially think. As it’s been postulated that during a near death experience, the pineal gland (which is a key organ in the practice of yoga and in all disciplines involving kundalini awakening) releases the drug dimethyltryptamine (DMT).  Rick Strassman (Strassman, 2001) theorized that DMT is responsible for the sensations one feels during a near-death experience. Others have postulated that near-death experiences may be due to epilepsy, which could also be connected with kundalini awakening.

From a biological perspective, kundalini appears to be a either  epilepsy, a natural release of DMT or some other form of brain-change in the temporal lobes.

It is probable that long-term meditation, hyperventilation, and other practices that are historically meant to ‘awaken one’s kundalini’ make one predisposed to frontal lobe epilepsy and the natural excretion of DMT.

Of course, this is currently only a hypothesis. But for me, it’s clear. While the exact mechanism of kundalini awakening is not clear, I believe that it’s something biological – a biological change for which ancient people have trained all their lives or have experienced spontaneously.

Currently, we are unsure of the biological basis of near-death experience. We have only speculations and hypotheses. We know that something biological is happening, but we don’t know what.


Is Kundalini Awakening Biological?



The evidence pointing that kundalini awakening is a biological phenomena that happens either through strong genetic predisposition (“spontaneous awakening’) or through years of meditation training is convincing.

Again, there are two ways in which you can interpret the evidence here:

1. The vitalistic explanation posits that near-death experiences are signs of something transcendental; they are signs of a ‘soul’ that transcends the physical world. Kundalini is the energy underlying the near-death experience, and thus, near-death experience is an indication of an aroused kundalini.  Alternatively, a near-death experience is viewed as a possible trigger for kundalini awakening.

2 The scientific explanation posits that near-death experiences are a biological phenomena and so is kundalini awakening. We are our bodies and nothing more.

Which one of these interpretations is right? NO ONE KNOWS. Let’s make a deal:

You pick the one that appeals the most to you and believe it’s true while respecting others who choose to believe in the explanation different from yours. We won’t be able to know for sure for a long time. I think that when each explanation has equal probability of being true, the best way is to choose the one that increases your quality of life the most. If you treat kundalini awakening as a goal and regularly do kundalini yoga or some other spiritual practice, the vitalistic explanation may appeal to you more.

If, on the other hand, you do not find the idea of kudalini awakening appealing and fulfilling, I suggest you pick the scientific interpretation.  Most spiritual teachers will tell you that kundalini awakening is not for everyone, and you shouldn’t bother yourself with it if you don’t have a deep inner calling to it. A kundalini awakening won’t make you healthier or more productive; it is purely a spiritual thing that will give you the hindu version of enlightenment, self-realization, and/or moksha.

Kundalini awakening is purely a spiritual thing. If you’re in it ‘for the health or for the bliss’ you’ve been sold a rotten deal, because if you’re unstable (if you suffer from an anxiety disorder, personality disorder, or post traumatic stress syndrome or any other psychological disorders) , you’ll most likely ruin your psyche even more by trying to awaken your kundalini awakening. All traditional yogis have emphasized that you need a healthy mind and body for kundalini awakening NOT that a kundalini awakening will give you a healthy mind and body.

Bottom line? If you don’t feel a deep spiritual calling for kundalini awakening, don’t waste your time on it. Treat it as an interesting fact, nothing more.

On the other hand, practices that were developed to ‘purify’ someone for kundalini awakening are useful for any westerner because they are essentially a form of ancient psychotherapy. These techniques are discussed in my book,  Energy Therapy, and I would consider them to be ideal to those who are aligned with the vitalistic interpretation of yoga and kundalini and want to purify their body for a kundalini awakening. They will also very quickly allow you to feel energies in comparison to other techniques – for example, Iyengar yoga, which is better for physical development.

The Traditional Purpose Of Kundalini Awakening

One has to understand that kundalini awakaning was and is a right-hand path spiritual concept. The goal of it is NOT better health, self-actualization or anything else we westerners want or desire. The goal of kundalini awakening is the achievement of ‘moksha’ or enlightenment. Which in the hindu and taoist tradition was understood as a fusion of the individual with universal consciousness. Basically one stops feeling like one has an ego, and instead experiences life as if he was just part of a greater field of consciousness. This is basically the ‘loss of ego’ spiritual disciplines talk about. The difference between the loss of ego praised by spiritual traditions and that of an ‘awakened’ master is that the drug-user will loose this state if he stops taking drugs, while on the other hand the enlightened master will loose the state if he stops meditating regularly

So in hindu mythology goal of kundalini awakening is not self-actualization but a permanent union with the hjigher being, total surrender oor self-annihilation into God.

During a full kundalini awakening your ego is ripped right off, and this can sometimes even lead to psychosis if you’re totally unprepared. (I personally think that the biggest problem with kundalini is not ‘achieving it’ but being prepared for it. Because if you’re genetically predisposed for it it will most likely happen anyway, but the problem is weather or not you’re prepared for it. That’s why I devoted numerous sections in my book Energy Therapy, various ancient purifying techniques that will prepare you for a kundalini awakening if feel like you’re meant to awaken. (According to some ancient scriptures it is something ‘you just feel’), so I’ll go with that.

What is kundalini awakening? And Why You Don’t Want It

Kundalini awakening from an energetic perspective.

From an energetic perspective kundalini awakening is not only an awakening but an unification. The unification of two energies in your body. The feminine and masculine.

But the bottom line is that kundalini awakening leads to one thing: Enlightenment. I would define enlightenment (in this context) in two ways. In an energetic and nonenergetic perspective:

From an energetic perspective someone who has an awakaned kundalini has all of his channels cleared and has unified his consciousness with that of the absolute

From a non-energetic perspective enlightenment is the loss of ones ego and the experience of life without an “I”, as unified with the whole world. (You can experience that by taking psilocybin if you’re curious what it means. It’s hard to define)

An awakened kundalini won’t make you happier, more productive or healthier. It will just lead to self-realization in the hindu sense of the world. In no perspective will it really lead to any form of ‘absolute knowledge’. Even in the energetic perspective it will only lead to having all of your ‘channels cleared’.

There are numerous accounts in which people who dealt with Osho, Jiddu Krishnamurti or U.G. Krishnamurti experienced ‘energies’ or ‘rushes of energies’. This is actually the mechanism through which the hindu concept of Shaktipat works. According to that hindu concept the guru (enlightened person who wants to teach you) has all his channels cleared and as such resonates at such a ‘high frequency’ that he increases yours while being near you. This is actually why Osho told his disciplines that the flower in his room will be so blessed that it will ‘reincarnate as an enlightened being’

The genesis of such a theory makes sense. To this day whenever we revere someone they’ll get an ‘energetic aura’. It could be that people just interpreted their unconscious subjective emotional judgement of a person as him having ‘higher energies’. Or it could be true. It could be that kundalini awakening does a biological change in a person that makes has a subtle effect on other people. This most likely would be done by PSI, whatever that is in reality. (Most people say it’s quantum entanglement, but they themselves are not sure).

From a traditional perspective kundalini awakening is an ‘alchemic’ way of achieving self-realization through the integration of the feminine and masculine in your body

But be is as it may the root principle of is is ego loss. Depersonification. The loss of ego. And while you need a strong ego to transcend it I personally believe that most people don’t really want to permanently loose their ego- their individuality. IF anything most western people I know want to embrace and affirm their autonomy and individuality.
Here I would like to give a little known fact: The east does not value autonomy and individuality as much as the west. It’s true. When you ask a chinese person “who are you” He will say “I’m a student of shenghai uni” and not “I am a student”. He will always mention the social context. This is why the whole concept of ‘loosing ones ego and merging with the collective’ was so appealing to the eastern mind. Most people try to sell the same phenomena in a way that appeals to the individualistic mind of the west. Even though it still involves that which most westerners simply don’t want.

But I feel like my kundalini is awakened! I AM A GURU and am supercool

Due to the dramatic nature of some of the experiences that can occur, it is easy to underestimate the length and scope of the journey. One thing is for sure. If we are feeling that we have arrived, and are hankering to announce it to the world, it is a sign that we have not. The
wisest course is to always favor the conduct of our practices over any experiences or flights of fancy that may arise, and just keep going

The thing is that if you’re compelled to brag about being ‘enlightened’ and ‘oh so spiritual ‘chances are you’re not. Because by definition true kundalini awakening/ enlightenment assumes a loss of ego. This is why humility was once of the ways in which enlightenment was actually ‘diagnosed’ in ancient times.

Within Therevada Buddhism there are actually four spiritual transgression for which you would be pretty much kicked out of the monastery:

– Theft
– Murder
– Sexual misconduct (think:masturbation)
– Boasting about spiritual accomplishments (“My kundalini awakened! Look how awesome I am!”)

Neurobiology of kundalini

And indeed pretty much all the symptoms of kundalini awakening are present after taking some hallucinogenic drugs. Especially psilocybin. This shows that the hypothesis that kundalini awakening is nothing more than a change in our nervous system to be very plausible, since a similar phenomena can be achieved short- term through drugs.

To me the fact that a similar state can be achieved through drug use is the ultimate evidence that kundalini is a biological phenomena, and not a psychological one as some people might claim.

-In her book ‘a stroke of insight’ the author desof insight describes a stroke she had in which her left brain was shut down and she experienced clear awareness of doinant right brain funcitoning. This caused significatn changes in h4rer personalit yand world perspective . It’s interesting that her descriptions of right-brain activity include man y phenomena described by mysti s such as having realizations of herself as one with everything and as a consciousness that has eternal life.

It is very plausible that what’s called ‘kundalini awakening’ just is a form of epilepsy that damages certain parts of the left brain hemisphere, making the right brain hemisphere dominant. This would make sense. Osho wasn’t even able to count to 100 after his enlightenment. And many of them had diminished functions of the left brain hemisphere- such as the time sense. This is yet another proof that kundalini awakening is a type of controled brain damage.

This interpretation is also in aligment with the fact that pretty much every spiritual exercise aims to strengthen the right hemisphere and sometimes even weaken the left. Spirituals books tend to glorify the right brain hemisphere while attacking the left. And it’s not a coincidence that Yogi Bhayan called his teachers ‘teachers of the age of aquarius “. The age of aquarius being essentially the age of the right brain.

Although kundalini has certain biological correspondences I think that if someone is seriously about practicing it, one should practice it from an energetic perspective. This is the one practice in which the energetic metaphor is simply useful. And I personally think that people who are not drawn to the energetic metaphor are not drawn into doing something actively to awaken their kundalini.

Is kundalini awakening permanent?

Many traditions have actually claimed that the state of enlightenment is ‘permanent’ but most people who ‘achieved self-realization’ continue meditation, so there is a real possibility that their constant state of samadhi would go away if they discontinued their practice or if a radical trauma happened to them,but as far as I know now enlightened person ever stopped being enlightened. It seems that it once your nervous system is damaged/changed in this way it is very unlikely to revert.

So all in all I would say that if you’re genetically predisposed to it kundalini awakening is as permanent as schizophrenia. So very, but again you need to be genetically predisposed for it to happen. Just like in schizophrenia. This is why for example Osho’s brother was also enlightened, even though he didn’t really do anything.

Does It Really Matter Weather Kundalini Is Biological Or Weather it’s Real??

Honestly, the answer is no. It is 100% true that a subjective experience which can be described as a kundalini awakening exists. It might be possible that there exist different expressions of it, but each of them is a natural unfoldment of the changes doing a LOT of yoga and meditation has on our brain.

One has to also remember that no yoga expert worth his salt would ever tell you to try to intentionally awaken your kundalini at the beginning of your yogic path. There are numerous accounts of people ruining their lives through that, because even if a kundalini awakening is not brain damage, but instead is an expression of transcendence it is still very detrimental to the quality of ones life if you have not spend a lot of time to prepare for it. U.G. Krishnamurti and Gopi Krishna have written about this extensively. And even The system of Mantak Chia tells you to meditate for years in order to prepare yourself for it. And by that I mean 5-9 years.

True there were people who seemingly achieved kundalini awakening instantaneously, but those didn’t try- they were naturally predisposed to it. When I was 13 I had a friend who started playing the piano after an hour of being introduced to it – he had an extreme natural talent for it, chances are you don’t. But honestly I don’t think ‘achieving a kundalini awakening’ should be a point- if anything it will stop you from being mindful and being in the moment, and being creative in forging your own path, which for me is what spirituality is all about.

There’s definitively nothing wrong if you’ve experienced a kundalini awakening, but you can’t force it.

Is there just one form of kundalini awakening? And should we care?

I actually lean towards no. I have seen people experience the feeling of energy moving up their spine just after an hour of doing pranayama, and after just as a few session of the kundalini meditation that you can read about in my book Energy Therapy: A Practical Analysis Of Energetic Modalities, but that doesn’t mean that this is the same awakening that U.G. Krishnamurti or Gopi Krishna had. Their’s involved months of very ‘weird’ experiences.

The exploration of the energetic system is very often done metaphorically. So allow me to explain. It might be that the kundalini energy is an expression of biological change in our nervous system – no matter if it’s an increase in gap junctions or nitric oxide synthase – something is trained when you do yoga, it could be that when you train that ‘something we don’t yet know for sure’ enough your body and through this mind starts to change.

And is very much plausible that you could have a near constant spiritual experience because of that. Actually you can have one right now- just take some peyote, mescaline or psilocybin, because many westerners who have achieved kundalini awakening and took those drugs in the past say that the experiences are very, very similar. You’ll feel one with the universe instantaneously, it could be very much possible that a kundalini awakening – no matter if it’s ‘slow’ or ‘rapid and powerful’ trains your brain to be more susceptible to those experiences, as it ‘trains’ the parts of the brain that are responsible for them. It’s pretty much common knowledge nowadays that someone who’s always depressed becomes more suggestible for depression and that the more you play chess the better you get. Meditation and yoga pretty much ‘train you towards experiencing a kundalini awakening’ and train you to experience spiritual experiences, which might very likely be the means through which a higher power allowed us to experience it. We don’t know for sure. But that’s not a ‘horrible thing which discredits it’ physicists and mathematicians, neurologists, doctors and nutritionists very often can’t say something for sure

Allow me give you an example from nutrition- because well… everyone eats! Right now there are two very popular and contradictory perspectives on diet out there. One is the low carb movement which says that to many carbs are evil and will lead to sickness, another is the low-fat vegan movement which claims that to much fat and protein is harmful – super opposed views, but there are scientists who believe in both .For example Colin Campbell is a proponent of the vegan diet, and he very openly claims that eating to much meat will give you cancer. While on the other hand Lorden Cordain claims that you can’t eat to much protein

And the most comical thing is that both those diet help people loose weight so every one of them works. So just pick the interpretation that fits you and your goals- you’ll make your life much easier. If you hate meat read the china study and if you love meat read a book about the paleo diet.

It’s the same with the kundalini. Accept your experiences, and allow them to enrich your world. Realize that crying about and dreaming about having an awakened kundalini and being the most spiritual person ever is counterproductive. Incidentally one of the worst ways of how you can be kicked out from being a zen monk in a monastery is to brag about how awesomely enlightened you are. (Seriously, there’s a rule for that)

Kundalini Awakening And Psychosis

Yes there is that. The process of kundalini awakening as experienced by Gopi Krishna and others is not a walk in the park some New Agers try to depict it as. It’s actually very similar to psychosis. So much that there are only a few symptoms that allow someone to distinguish kundalini syndrome from psychosis:

the presence of an energy phenomena
unusual breathing patterns
visions of light
the feeling of blocked energy (this is related to the concept that the painful symptoms of kundalini awakening are due to energetic blockages. Many theorists claim that kundalini awakening is only healthy when you’re totally clear energetically). This is also why many recommend acupuncture for kundalini syndrome.
On the other hand, if you have any of those symptoms from the energetic perspective it would be very wise to focus on eliminating blockages in your body and on developing mindfulness which I’ll teach you to the best of my abilities in my book Energy Therapy: A Practical Analysis Of Energetic Modalities.

Does Kundalini Awakening have to be painful?

One has to remember that Gopi Krishna and U.G. Krishnamurti have achieved kundalini awakening on their own- they didn’t have ah and of a ‘master’ to guide them, and they certainly weren’t totally energetically clear. It is very much possible that the asanas and other techniques of yoga ‘clear the energy channels’ sufficiently for kundalini awakening to be a safe and non-damaging process.

One hypothesis is that clearing the energy channels is basically preparing your energy system for the changes brought upon by kundalini awakening. This is also why most traditional hindu scriptures said that the neurotic can’t achieve enlightenment- he has just to many energetic blockages, as in the traditional chinese system of energetics and in the indian systems emotional disturbances were energy blockages and imbalances in the bodies energy system.

So to safely awaken your kundalini you either have to find an enlightened master who’s energies you can distinctly feel (In the energetic perspective that’s rather clear- and you can’t miss it! It’s something you feel. If you don’t feel anything while meeting someone who advertises himself as a master- if you don’t feel a presence, he’s not the master for you. It’s that simple) or you can proceed to kundalini awakening very slowly – instead focusing on clearing your energy system of blockages, knowing that the awakening will unfold when you’re totally clear. This is the only way a kundalini awakening can be entirely safe if you’re doing it without a guide, and this is what most systems of yoga such as sivananda yoga or bihar yoga attempt to do.

Let me give you a quote from Gopi Krishnas book on the kundalini:

The magnitude of the risk that one has to ruin in the event of a powerful awakening all of a sudden, can be gauged from the fact that simultaneously with the release of the new energy, profound functional and structural changes begin to occur in the delicate fabric of the nervous system with such rapidity and violence as to be sufficient to cause unhinging of the brain instantaneously if the organism as a whole does not possess enough power of adjustment to bear the tremendous strain, as actually happens in a large percentage of cases”

It is important to note that Gopi Krishna never did any of the exercises that prepare one ofthe kundalini awakening. He never did pranayamas and never did asanas… or anything else. While U.G. Krishnamurti did only a year of yoga, not enough to get totally cleared.

Should I try to awaken my kundalini on my own?

Definitively not. This might very easily read to kundalini syndrome and if not it will lead to wasted time. You see the people who have succeeded in a full kundalini awakening did it in a very controlled environment and in the presence of a master. One theory of the kundalini (there are several!) states that to safely awaken your kundalini all of your meridians have to be clear and all of the energetic blockages in your body have to be released. Sitting near an enlightened master naturally clears them and/or ‘raises your vibration’ (at least according to that model of reality), so book learning won’t do much do, and I would lie if I would recommend you or anyone else to try it for yourself.

What I can do though is to give you some of the safe techniques that might lead to a spontaneous kundalini awakening while increasing your overall health and well being. I’ve described those techniques in my book Energy Therapy: A Practical Analysis Of Energetic Modalities.

But honestly if a full kundalini awakening is something that’s your true hearts desire. I would only recommend you to find someone who’s a truly enlightened master, which is rather hard to do.

This is not to say that such a journey could not be achieved on your own. It might ,but honestly it would take immense discipline and knowledge of yoga. Only someone who’s very far on the spiritual path should think about kundalini awakening, and even then he would do best to just leave it alone – just do meditations that improve your health in general, when the time comes, your kundalini will awaken naturally, when you’re ready for it.

I would like to end this article with a quote from a scripture, specifically the Kalamas Sutra:
“Do not believe in what you have heard; do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations; do not believe anything because it is rumored and spoken of by many; do not believe merely because the written statement of some old sage is produced; do not believe conjectures; do not believe merely in the authority of your teachers and elders. After observation and analysis, when it agrees with reason and it is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it”
This is what you should do when you read me or anyone else, especially when it comes to the energy system

I personally believe that someone with mental problems, or with serious psychological issues should not concern himself with trying to awaken his kundalini. Yeah it sounds nice but the attempt to force it will lead to more harm than good. You’ll be far better of focusing on the grounding and purifying practices thought in yoga integrated with western knowledge. Carl Jung himself warned against trying to ‘awaken onces kundalini’ and using eastern approaches exclusively if you’re unstable. And I personally agree. People with mental problems are out of touch with reality enough with magical thinking and cognitive errors, they don’t need a ‘magical system’ to propel them further into delusion.

Yoga, mindfulness and meditation are helpful for people with anxiety and depressive disorders, but I think it would be counterproductive for those people to bother themselves with kundalini awakening if they don’t show the specific symptoms of kundalini awakening already. I sincerely believe that things like kundalini awakening should be left to the spiritual enthusiast, because you need to be already stable to benefit from the ‘more spiritual’ matters.

I for example myself admit that I’m not totally stable yet. (No I’m not. And I’ve got enough realism and common sense to admit that: My personality is not yet fully integrated, my traumas are not yet fully resolves, my character errors are still there, I still have a lot of body armor) That’s why I use the safer purifying techniques, but don’t aim to awaken the kundalini. Although who knows. Maybe I’m predisposed for it and I will awaken my kundalini and achieve enlightenment once I’m completely cleared of all of my psychological problems? Probably not, and I’m not counting on it.

I personally love the quote of an osho follower in the Louis Theroux weird weekends:

The spiritual journey isn’t for everyone. Swami Vivekenanda repeatedly stated that if you have ‘weak nerves’ (as in you have mental problems) you’ll just be hurt by an attempt to awaken your kundalini, and he definitively emphasized that it’s not for everyone.

I want to emphasize that no one should ‘feel bad’ that ‘kundalini awakening isn’t for him’. Seriously this is like the least important thing in real life. You can get all the benefits of yoga, acupressure and virtually any other self-treatment modality, without even thinking about kundalini awakening. Think of it as simply something that happens to people who are genetically predisposed to it and are pure enough. I personally won’t teach practices that try to ‘force’ a kundalini awakening. Those can be dangerous.

But at the same time I wholeheartedly believe that the purifying techniques are. And this is why I have enclosed them all in my book Energy Therapy. So if you want an 80/20 of the ‘spiritual’ techniques that have value for someone who’s disturbed I cannot recommend my book enough, I invite you to check it ou.

One has to understand that different traditions will always have a different definition of kundalini, and in turn of kundalini awakaning.

Yogi Bhajan defined kundalini as

“It is the whole cosmos energy in the indvidiual and beyond the individual. It is the energy of consciousness. Without the constant flow of that energy, you could not live. With a large flow, your mind beings to flow and awaken. You stop living in imaginary realityies and you become very duticful to the tasks and joys of this life.

Yogi bhajan explained the usual symptoms associated with kundalini as follows:

“What about people who have great visions and psychic experiences or whose bodies jerk and tremble after meditation? Is this the kundalini rising?

Thisi s glitter at the bottom of the ladder. These lallucinations, psychism, and nerve weakenesses mean nothing. If a student practicing kundalini yoga is very blocked up in the spine and pranic nadis, he maybe have a one-time experience when the channels are cleared. Butu that is one time, brief, and does not disrupt anything. These other caues are when the nerves have not been prepared, there is no mantra, or breathing has not been practiced. The real measure of kundalini rising is your consciousness from breath to breath and courage you bring to your life. ”

– it could actually be very much possible that kundalini simply happens in the brain and we experience it in our body. This makes sense since the experience of a ‘phantom limb’ and ultimately the felt sense of our normal limbs and pretty much everything we experience happens essentially in the brain.

It would be very nice if in the future we actually put someone undergoing a ‘kundalini awakening’ into an MRI to see the patterns his brain activity, the results would pretty much show us exactly what kundalini awakening is. Studies have clearly shown that meditation, (especially the meditations that are given in systems meant to prepare one for kundalini awakening, such as kundalini yoga) create very real changes in the brain. It could be that those changes basically prepare the brain for the brain phenomena that we now call kundalini awakening. We are not sure what it is now. It could be epilepsy, it could be brain damage. It could just a change into a right-brain dominance. Or it could be something we can’t yet properly describe.

But to me it is a fact that we’re dealing with a very real unexplored neurological phenomena that can be induced in genetically predisposed individuals through long term mediative and spiritual practices, and that this phenomena is mostly beneficial. Although I believe that only someone who’s ‘drawn’ towards kundalini awakening should bother himself with such practices

If you are drawn towards awakening your kundalini I recommend that you buy my book Energy Therapy, in which I write about several purifying /clearing techniques that from an energetic perspective prepare your body for a ‘kundalini awakening’. And then if you’re really serious about awakening your kundalini I recommend you follow one of those following paths:

1 Go to a healing tao retreat. The microcosmic orbit seems to be very similar to the kundalini. And there are some teachers who might Guide you trhough the process Most notably Micheal Winn

2 Follow a path of hatha yoga. I personally practice sivananda yoga, although I akcnowladge it doesn’t really focus on the awakening of the kundalini. Satyananda yoga and kundalini yoga are far more kundalini focused. Of all the yogic systems available in the west I would recommend kundalini yoga if kundalini awakening is your main interest. Virtually every major newer publication on kundalini was influenced by the teachings of Yogi Bhajan and I think that this sort of yoga will fit the best with people who are drawn towards the energetic perspective. The only note I would like to say is that this yoga isn’t very grounding, and you would do well by supplementing it with the grounding practices I describe in Energy Therapy

3 I personally think that it’s a waste of time to try to awaken your kundalini with a book. If you really don’t have access to a live class or a live teacher (which I recommend here) I suggest personalized training. The closest thing you can get via distance learning is the kundalini awakening process and this home study course http://www.umaatantra.com/ which I consider to be pretty much the best choice when it comes to serious ‘energetic development’ through distance learning
